The Battle for Social Networking Dominance
The battle is heating up in the world of social media, with Google throwing their hat into the social networking ring.
Social media and mostly that of the big social networks have turned the way we communicate with each other on its head, providing video, instant messaging, and collaboration in the form of a web browser and application. Social networks aren’t just for the teen and college crowd; many businesses, corporations, and celebrities have found easy ways of getting a hold of their fans and consumers.
In the battle for social networking dominance, the real winners will of course be those of us that use social networks. Users want to be able to share their lives with friends and family, but they also want to be secure about it. Current giant Facebook has had its share of security snafus that have caused users to scratch their heads at the ever changing site policies. On the other hand, users also want to be able to be engaged by others, including businesses and even celebrities; Twitter, the microblogging site, is a good example of one person being able to reach out to a world of different people.
As stated at the top, the new kid on the block is Google, with its introduction of Google. Many have sited this to be the true showdown of the social network dominance – Facebook with its 750 million users vs Google and its 10 million and rising. G is actually still in private beta and can only be used by those current members who send out invites to their friends, but as the graphs have shown, less than a month since its Google project opened, 10 million users are taunting Facebook friends that the end is nigh.
It’s still early to tell how exactly Google may redefine social networks, if Facebook will strike back, or if any of the other networks see the upstart in their sights.
